Post Dental School

Choosing your dental career path is a significant decision that requires thoughtful consideration. Beyond the allure of success and financial rewards, the driving force should stem from a genuine passion for the field. The way we think about it is that you will be spending nearly half a century working – make sure it's in a role you truly care about!

Pathways

Other Avenues to Pursue

  • Academia: Aspiring clinical academics must complete speciality training and obtain a teaching or research qualification, often a PhD. Academic Clinical Fellowships and Lectureships are potential career stages. It's worth noting that you can pursue additional roles alongside your primary job in teaching. Take, for instance, lecturers, professors, and tutors – not only do they teach, but many of them also actively work in the dental hospital, specialising in their respective fields or doing private work during the weekend.

  • Armed Forces: Choosing a career in the armed forces brings unique incentives, such as grants, competitive salaries, pension plans, accommodation, and health/education plans. Considerations include frequent relocations and contractual commitments.

  • Associates: Working as an associate dentist in primary care is a popular choice. Salaries vary based on factors like the type of care provided, expertise level, and location. Associates can work independently or for corporate dental groups, with potential advantages such as networking opportunities and clinical support.
