You need a dentistry degree from a globally recognized institution. Now, if you've trained outside the UK (whether in the EEA or non-EEA), the next step on your journey to becoming a licensed dentist involves tackling the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE). If you have a degree from Albania or Kosovo, they are not in the EEA. If you need more information on the qualifications recognised for full registration, get into contact with the GDC.

 

A little tip: Some people might be exempt from the ORE grind. Specifically, individuals from certain countries who wrapped up their dental education before a specific year—usually around 2001. But, hold your dental instruments, there's a catch. The GDC isn't accepting degrees from just any random dental school. They have a list of universities and dental schools globally that they recognise, which can be found here. Chances are this specific exemption might not apply to everyone, but it's worth a mention.

 

You will need to pay for your ORE exam, and more information and resources can be found here. Once you pass, you will need to register with the GDC - the GDC offers clear instructions on how to do this. Once you register, you will finally be eligible to work in the UK. There are two ways you can work:

1. Apply directly for jobs in private practice. This is more straightforward

2. Working with the NHS - you need a performer number.

The process is long, you do have the option to pursue other roles temporarily, such as dental nurse, hygienist, or even teaching roles at universities. This not only provides valuable income to help with costs incurred but also allows you to seek guidance from experienced colleagues, understand clinical standards, and familiarise yourself with various practices in the field.
